Melissa Edwards

My name is Melissa Edwards.  I now work for that school system where I attended elementary, middle, and high school. It is interesting going to meetings or trainings at schools with some of  my former teachers and people who have known my family for years. I graduated from Meredith College as a NC Teaching Fellow. It was there that I met my husband, who graduated from NC State, so there is a lot of red around my house. My husband and I have one daughter, Madalyn, who is four.

I have a Masters Degree in Reading Education from Appalachian and my AIG Licensure from Western Carolina University. I am again in school working on a degree in Instructional Technology. In my free time (not that I have much), I enjoy reading and creating scrapbook pages (mostly about my daughter). I am also the official scorekeeper for my church softball team. :)

After teaching 4th grade for 7 years, with a focus on reading and writing, I worked as a gifted education resource teacher for one year. During that time I focused on Problem-Based Learning and using technology in my classroom. I became a K-5 technology facilitator for a few months before joining the Instructional Technology Department for the entire school district focusing on instructional resources. My favorite things to teach involve reading and writing. I have learned about tapping into students' creativity and using problem-based learning as well as technology. Technology can also be used in various ways to meet the needs of all learners and to open up the world. In order to better prepare students for the future, technology must be a key component to and in their education.
